The Fourth of July is a time to gather with family and friends, fire up the grill, enjoy the fireworks, and celebrate our nation’s independence. While you’re making the most of the long weekend, it’s also one of the busiest times of the year for insurance claims.

After years of helping clients through unexpected accidents, we’ve noticed the same types of claims come up year after year. The good news? Many of them can be prevented with a few simple precautions.

Here are five of the most common Fourth of July insurance claims—and how to help avoid them.

1. Fireworks Claims

This one probably won’t come as a surprise. Fireworks are one of the biggest hazards during the Fourth of July holiday. Every year, thousands of people are injured, and fireworks can quickly lead to costly property damage and insurance claims if they’re not used safely.

To put it in perspective, sparklers alone send thousands of people to the emergency room each year and burn at temperatures exceeding 1,000°F.

  • Only use fireworks outdoors, away from dry grass, structures, and overhanging branches.
  • Never hold a lit firework or point it at anyone.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby.
  • If a firework doesn’t go off, wait 20 minutes, then soak it in water—never relight it.
  • Keep children at a safe distance and supervised by an adult at all times.
  • Treat sparklers like the fire they are. Keep young children away or educate older children on safe use.

2. Grill Fires

Backyard cookouts are a Fourth of July tradition, but grill fires are another common source of insurance claims. Fortunately, they’re also one of the easiest to prevent. In many cases, grease buildup is the culprit, so taking a few minutes to clean your grill before cooking can make a big difference.

  • Position the grill at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, and anything flammable.
  • Clean the grates and remove grease buildup before grilling.
  • Use long-handled grilling tools to keep a safe distance from the heat.
  • Never leave the grill unattended.
  • Allow the grill or coals to cool completely before storing or disposing of them.

3. Pool & Water Accidents

Whether you’re spending the day at the pool or on the lake, water-related accidents increase over holiday weekends. The best way to prevent them is through active supervision and preparation.

  • Designate a responsible adult to actively watch swimmers and rotate the responsibility throughout the day.
  • Never leave children unattended near water, even if they know how to swim.
  • Make sure inexperienced swimmers wear properly fitted life jackets or flotation devices.
  • Establish and enforce pool rules, such as no running or diving in shallow water.
  • Keep a first aid kit and rescue equipment nearby.

4. Auto Accidents

The Fourth of July consistently ranks among the busiest travel weekends of the year, bringing more traffic—and unfortunately, more accidents. Planning ahead can go a long way toward keeping everyone safe.

  • Inspect your tires, brakes, and fluid levels before traveling.
  • Buckle up and ensure children are properly secured in the correct car seats.
  • Put the phone away and avoid other distractions while driving.
  • If alcohol is part of your plans, arrange a designated driver or rideshare before the festivities begin.
  • Allow extra travel time and be patient in heavier holiday traffic.

5. Liability Claims

Hosting friends and family is one of the best parts of the holiday, but it also comes with added responsibility. Slips, falls, pet incidents, trampoline injuries, and other accidents on your property can sometimes lead to liability claims.

  • Keep walkways clear of toys, cords, and other tripping hazards.
  • Supervise children around pools, trampolines, and play equipment.
  • Keep pets secured if they become anxious around crowds or fireworks.
  • Make sure outdoor spaces are well-lit if guests will be staying into the evening.

Have a Safe Fourth of July! A little preparation can go a long way toward preventing accidents and helping you enjoy a safe, memorable, and claim-free holiday weekend.
